*Goodwife*, the exuberant second album from the London-based band Friedberg, might sound like wild, irreverent nights on the dancefloor, but at its core, it tells a story about fighting for that very kind of freedom.
Austrian-born singer Anna Friedberg remembers her grandmother as "a truly strong woman." "She lived in the countryside her whole life, but she was very intelligent; she read a lot of books, learned French after the age of 70, and loved poetry," she says with a smile. Yet, tied to a man who "couldn't handle the fact that she had a life outside of him," she was trapped in an abusive marriage. In the title track "Goodwife"—peppered with cheeky nods to the 1988 Inner City hit "Good Life"—Anna imagines rewriting her past and giving it a new ending. "For me," she says, "this new 'Goodwife' leaves codependency behind and is kind to herself instead of everyone else."
Even though "Goodwife" is the record's emotional heart, a zest for life runs through the entire album. Following their critically acclaimed debut *Hardcore Workout Queen* (2024), Friedberg have taken an exuberant new direction for their second album. Where guitars and indie sensibilities once set the tone, Anna and her Friedberg Collective—a group of London-based musicians including Daniel Brandt, Cheryl Pinero, Hannah Feenstra, Emily Linden, Matthias Biermann, and Fifi Dewey—now want one thing above all: to make you dance. "I always feel like there are these two sides to me, and on this record, I wanted to follow the more danceable, energetic side," Anna says enthusiastically.
