An album that shouldn’t even exist. A band that never wanted to form in the first place. Two musicians who usually explore totally different soundscapes. And yet, here they are: the band and the album. Blone is the new project by Tara Doyle and Erol Sarp. Their album, “This Time Next Year,” sounds very different than the singer-songwriter songs Tara usually performs under her full name, Tara Nome Doyle. Different than the piano-based instrumental electronica that Erol releases with Lukas Vogel as Grandbrothers. How does Blone sound? Somewhere between dream pop and trip hop, it embraces influences from electronic music and soul with lyrics about longing, about dependence and of the urge for independence. Lyrics that sometimes contradict themselves, because that's the thing with feelings and life: never straightforward, contradictory, sometimes even messy.

Some might say that “This Time Next Year” was a pure coincidence, just like the band itself. But it’s not as simple as that: Tara Doyle and Erol Sarp have known each other from concerts and tours, both highly appreciating each other’s music. When Tara wanted to use a break from touring to experiment, she immediately thought of Erol: “But I wasn’t sure how he would react. After all, Grandbrothers don’t use vocals at all,” she recalls, “so I simply cast my net and asked him.”

The answer? Positive. „We made one or two phone calls and then I created some very raw beats on my synthesizer, just to have a starting point. I thought that she might not be able to do anything with it”, Erol says and laughs. Boy, was he wrong. The vocal arrangements she sent back deeply impressed him. „So we just kept going and with each new round, new details were added to the initial raw ideas.”

Blone is also about merging the different cultural backgrounds of the two musicians. Like Tara’s Norwegian-Irish roots that inspired the band name, relating to the Norwegian term for mountains that appear to be blue from afar. Erol’s Turkish family history also becomes part of the music, from the Saz to the deferred rhythms of the songs.

The plan to just make one song together didn’t work out. Instead, both of them enjoyed working together so much that Blone turned into a full band. With „This Time Next Year“ only being the first chapter of the story. An album that embraces their audience between nostalgia and melancholy, joy, euphoria and curiosity about the future. It’s challenging. It drags you on the dancefloor and accompanies you in quiet moments.

How lucky we are.
